Helen and Dave's Wedding at the Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate, West Yorkshire

Helen and Dave got married back in June, at the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate, West Yorkshire. I've known them both for a lot of years and it was an honour to be both photographer and guest at their wedding - a first for me. Another first was that I got to work alongside a seasoned pro... an old family friend of theirs, Reg Cox, who was Senior Lecturer in Photography at Liverpool John Moores University. He had photographed a number of family weddings over the years and although he chose to not shoot the whole wedding due to health reasons, he wanted to be involved, and so took the lead on family/group formals. It was a privilege to work with someone so experienced!

I arrived at the hotel in the morning to photograph Helen and her bridesmaids and family getting ready in their awesome suite that was the size of a generous apartment! The atmosphere was very relaxed - Helen was one of the most organised brides ever! Her hair and makeup was already done when I arrived and she was enjoying a bit of relaxing time, before getting into her dress. She also took the opportunity to give her bridesmaids some gifts.

I then dashed downstairs to capture the guests arriving and the groomsmen awaiting Helen's arrival - without a second shooter, I have to try my best to be in two places at once!

After taking some images of the guests, I ran back upstairs to get some photos of Helen and her bridal party and family, all dressed and ready to go!

Then it was time for the big show! Helen and Dave had hoped to get married outside, but sadly, the British summer wasn't playing ball. The ceremony room was beautiful though, with big windows letting in the light.

After the ceremony, the couple and their guests enjoyed a celebratory glass of bubbly and some canapés to keep them going until the meal, before heading outside to do the group photos. Reg took the lead on the group shots, although I took some as well. It was interesting to see how he worked and get some tips! The weather wasn't good at all, but the rain eased for long enough for us to get some photos.

Helen, Dave and I then took a walk around the grounds to do a few photos of the two of them.

It was then time for the meal, speeches and cake cutting, following which it was time for me to join the party!

'Uncle Reg' took a break from photographing to do a great speech...

Dave, a man of few words, pulled out all the stops for his speech, resulting in laughter and happy tears.

The on the best man Dan...

And finally the cutting of the lovely cake, before it was time for me to sign off and join the party.
